N2 - Archaeologist's recent interest for young children's (particularly infants) burials enables to draw up an inventory of newborns and infants burials in three antique territories. They approximately cover the modern region Centre and were discovered out of traditional funerary contexts. The study of these burials, located in 39 distinct sites (dated from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages, most of them however dating from the Roman Period), makes it possible to approach the funerary ritual specific to a certain part of the population : infants. The ancient origin of this practice, it's development throughout Antiquity and it's decrease in the Early Middle Ages are describded through several examples. Besides, the young deads status ' and the different rites of passage he is submitted to are studied in the light of antique and ethnographic sources. They allow, by their comparison with archaeological data, to suggest various interpretations as to the specific localisation of their burial and underline the young dead's positive role, in opposition with certain assumptions frequently advanced : exclusion burials and infanticide. Finally, attention is drawn to parts of cemeteries exclusively devoted to young children. This study, through various archaeological and ethnographic examples, underlines the infants 's particular status, and mainly that of newborns, in many historical times societies, principally gallo-roman society.
