Description:
The context for Quantz's substantial contributions to flute design, composition, and performance is established through investigations of Dresden archives concerning performing forces there circa 1694-1750. Precedents for and influences on Quantz's music are established through an examination of flute music by the Dresden composers Heinichen, Hasse, Graun, Lotti, and Quantz's teacher Zelenka, as well as by Telemann and Händel, whose 1719 Dresden performance is documented. Central here are sacred and theatrical works overlooked in previous investigations. Finally, influences on J.S. Bach and on the empfindsamer Stil of C.P.E. Bach are considered.
