<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>A generalized variational principle is presented, which leads to a modified finite element approach for three‐dimensional field problems. Both, potential function and velocity field, are approximated by expansions which are continuous across the inter‐element boundaries. The rapid convergence of this mixed model is shown by two examples.</jats:p>
