In their 1962 article «Tenseness and Laxness», Jakobson and Halle set out to account for Jones’s set of English chronemes in terms of a phonetico-phonological opposition between intrinsic binary features of tenseness / laxness. Yet, prior to this publication, Jakobson, Fant and Halle (1952) had excluded these features from the phonology of RP English vowels. This paper acknowledges the epistemological turn in the development of Jakobson’s theory of distinctive features and argues, on the basis of an exegetic analysis of material from the earlier period of his model up to its later versions, that the integration of such features into the 1952 phonological representation of RP English vowels would have been simply incompatible with his belief, at the time, in the principle of Ockham’s razor.
Dans leur article «Tenseness and Laxness», Jakobson et Halle (1962) s’affairaient à la tâche de ramener les paires chronémiques de Jones sous la forme d’une opposition phonético-phonologique de traits binaires intrinsèques tendu/ lâche. Antérieurement à cette publication, de tels traits s’étaient pourtant vu exclure par Jakobson, Fant et Halle (1952) de la description phonologique des voyelles de l’anglais RP. Reconnaissant ce revirement épistémologique dans le développement jakobsonien de la théorie des traits distinctifs, le présent article entend montrer, au travers d’une analyse exégétique du modèle primitif de Jakobson et de ses variantes subséquentes, que l’intégration de la dite opposition de tension / laxité vocalique en 1952 à la phonologie des voyelles de l’anglais RP était tout simplement incompatible avec le principe du rasoir d’Occam auquel Jakobson avait alors souscrit.
