  • Beschreibung: The Leipzig church music of Bach is illuminated against the backdrop of general musical developments in the middle of the 18th c. As his arrangement of the Stabat Mater of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi shows, Bach by no means closed his mind to the Italian vocal style introduced to central Germany in the 1730s by Johann Adolf Hasse, but in his own compositions held to the stylistic ideals of ca. 1720-25. A comparison of the repertoire in the last Passion programs presented by Bach with the Passion oratorio offered by his successor, Gottlob Harrer, in 1751 (Ich weiß nicht, wo ich bin, setting his own translation of a Passion text by Metastasio), illustrates the degree to which Bach's death led to radical change in the style of church music in Leipzig.
