<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>In the Canada Health Survey a number of questions were posed to enable the estimation of the total number of days that are lost to acute (short‐term) health problems by Canadians. In this paper we show how, under certain assumptions, these data may also be used to obtain estimates of the number of episodes of loss days and hence of the average length of an episode.</jats:p>
