Were phenomena and processes set in motion during the 19th century in the Caribbean of which we are only now becoming fully aware? This examination of the kaleidoscopic world of the Caribbean through the literary and cultural transfer that took place during that epoch offers completely new insights into early processes of cultural globalization. Racist discourses, established models of 'white' abolitionists, the politics of memory, and the previously ignored importance of the Haitian revolution come together to form an amalgam that forces us to question our current notion of a purely Western modernity.
