This study is the first to essay an appreciation and analysis of the scientist Alexander von Humboldt as a writer. Its focus is literary, and it inquires into the historical preconditions, contexts, and impacts of Humboldt’s successful writing career. Humboldt’s extended and extensive activities as a writer illuminate important aspects of scientific modernization and specialization, the increasingly problematic concept of nature, and the specific history of German education in the 19th century.
Von 1788 bis 1859 war Alexander vonHumboldt als Schriftsteller tätig. Erstmals untersucht diese Studie den literargeschichtlichen Kontext seiner deutschen Schriften von den ersten Briefen über die Ansichten der Natur bis zum unvollendeten Kosmos : Rhetorik und Stil, Gattungen und Verlage, Publikum, Übersetzungen und den ehrgeizig verfolgten Ruhm als Nationalautor. Humboldts Versuche, empirische Naturforschung und idealistische Bildung zu vereinbaren und bei aller Spezialisierung des Wissens Natur als Ganzes zu fassen, erscheinen dabei vor allem als literarische Projekte eines professionellen Autors.
