Dies ist die erste Studie zur Freundschaft im Neuplatonismus. Anhand von Einzeluntersuchungen zu Plotin, Iamblich, Themistios und Kaiser Julian wird nachgewiesen, dass Freundschaft der Zentralbegriff der neuplatonischen politischen Philosophie ist. Für die Neuplatoniker umfasst Freundschaft alle Bereiche des politischen und sozialen Lebens sowie die Strukturen des Kosmos und des Transzendenten, wobei der metaphysische Freundschaftsbegriff den politischen fundiert. Die Studie leistet einen Beitrag zur Erforschung der neuplatonischen Ethik und politischen Philosophie und zur spätantiken Herrschaftstheorie.
This is the first published study about the significance of friendship in Neo-Platonism. Individual examinations of the writings of Plotinus, Iamblichus, Themistius, and Emperor Julian demonstrate that friendship is the core concept within Neo-Platonic political philosophy. For the Neo-Platonists, friendship encompasses all areas of political and social life as well as the structures of the cosmos and the transcendental world. Thus, the metaphysical concept of friendship forms the basis for Neo-Platonic political philosopy. This study makes an important contribution to research in Neo-Platonist ethics and political philosophy and to the theory of governance in late antiquity.
