Background: A prehospital telemedicine system is being introduced in more and more regions of Germany as a supplement to standard care. From a central office, a Doctor can communicate with emergency services on-site in real time, provide diagnostic support and delegate therapeutic measures. The expectations of the users are essential for the long-term success of a telemedicine project. Question: What do future users (dispatchers, medical and non-medical personnel in the emergency services and in the emergency room) expect from the introduction of a prehospital telemedicine system? Methods: Using paper-based questionnaires, the expectations of the people who work with the telemedicine system are assessed and subsequently evaluated. Results: The majority of respondents agreed with the statements that the telemedicine concept leads to faster diagnosis and a faster start of therapy and improves the quality of patient care. An improvement in personal professional performance as well as a reduction in workload and documentation effort are not expected.
