Kleine und mittlere Unternehmen (KMU) sind ein zentraler Bestandteil des deutschen Mittelstands und tragen mit ihrer Innovationskraft bedeutend zur Leistungsfähigkeit der deutschen Volkswirtschaft bei. Dabei basiert die Innovationsfähigkeit von KMU oft weniger auf formaler Forschung und Entwicklung (F&E), sondern auf dem Zusammenspiel einer Vielzahl von Lernprozessen mit verschiedenen Akteuren. Für dieses Innovationsmodell wurde das Konzept des "learning by doing - using - interacting" vorgeschlagen. Basierend auf diesem breiten Lern- und Innovationskonzept sowie einer Serie von Unternehmensinterviews schlagen wir ein Indikatorenset vor, mit dem die Innovationstätigkeit in KMU ohne formale F&E umfassender abgebildet werden kann. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) are a key part of the German 'Mittelstand'. Through their innovative behavior they make a significant contribution to the performance of the German economy. Contrary to larger firms using research and development (R&D), the competitiveness of SMEs often relies on the combination of heterogeneous learning processes involving numerous stakeholders. Previous studies have established the concept of "learning by doing - using - interacting" to describe this model of innovation. Based upon this broader learning and innovation model, we propose a set of indicators that can capture innovation processes in SMEs without formal R&D more broadly. The complete set of indicators with formulated items can be found in the appendix of this paper.
