Description: Summary: Serum bile acids accumulate in liver failure. We show that, depending on their composition and quantity, these bile acids activate Takeda G-protein–coupled receptor 5, an immunomodulatory G-protein–coupled receptor that is highly expressed in monocytes. Takeda G-protein–coupled receptor 5 activation leads to monocyte dysfunction and correlates with mortality.
