  • Description: A view of South American political and social troubles during the Twentieth Century

Part one. A documentary team travels from Panama to Tierra del Fuego. Also known as 'Continent Aflame'. In Chile, the new socialist Allende government under Salvador Allende is featured. The nationalisation of copper mines, the 'Pot rebellion' of Chilean middle classes and a 'fascist' demonstration all feature. Also included are scenes of riots and riot police, farmers, livestock, Santiago in Chile, posters of Ernesto 'Che' Guevara, footage of Guevara with a Chilean mining boss, Chilean businessmen playing golf, and Chilean peasants ploughing and working the land. Footage of Cuba's 1959 revolution celebrations is included along with archive material of the 1910 Mexican Revolution, including forage of Zapata and Pancho Villa. Footage of Peru features the regime of General Valasco, tanks, land reforms, and the expropriation of the oil industry, scenes of Independence Day parades and a Catholic mass attended by Velasco, extensive footage of a cockfight, the Inca city of Machu Pichu, and Lake Titicaca. The film accuses Columbus and Pizarro of ruining South America, and describes oil companies as the next wave of conquerors. Coverage of the Dominican Republic includes scenes from the 1965 civil war scenes, the US intervention, riots and death, accusing the US of betraying its founding principles. Footage of Venezuela includes a press conference where president Rafael Caldera discusses nationalisation and oil workers. Images of New York City and accusations of Nelson Rockefeller being a plunderer are followed by footage of people rioting against Rockefeller's visit to Venezuela, and burning American flags. Archive footage includes Nazi rallies and Second World War destruction, American soldiers and American military power in Latin America during the early 20th century, images of Latin American poverty and a children's cemetery
