  • Description: The impact of major sporting events on host city can be of various type: economic, physical-environmental, socio-cultural, psychological, political-administrative, tourism-commercial. Much of the research has focussed on measuring the positive economic effects. Despite an increasing desire to host events there is not a corresponding research in identifying and measuring negative impacts generated by these events. In particular there is limited understanding about the impact of crime on hosting cities. Increased crime can be a long term impact that persists after the event. This paper investigates the relation, if any, between the fact that an Italian city hosted the 1990 World Football Cup and its crime rates. Analysis aims at better understanding the nature of crimes during a mega event in order to be able to prevent, in future, such offenses. The methodology used is panel data analysis. We found that hosting the 1990 World Football Cup led to a significant increase in most of crimes against property: bag-snatching, pick-pocketing, shop-lifting and burglary
