Description:
In Eleanor Fox and Mor Bakhoum's new book titled Making Markets Work for Africa: Markets, Developments, and Competition Law in Sub-Saharan Africa (Oxford University Press, 2019), the authors offer a comprehensive look at the role that competition law can play in promoting economic development as well as fairness and equity in the diverse economies of Sub-Saharan Africa. The book sets the context for the jurisdictions in Africa that have some form of competition law, analyzes the state of competition policy in African states, and provides a road map for an effective competition policy based on the degree of economic development of the jurisdiction. In September 2019, AfronomicsLaw convened a book symposium on Making Markets Work for Africa. This paper provides a summary of the thoughtful contributions to this symposium. The eight reviews highlight the book's helpful resources for regulators and practitioners, examines prior literature on competition law in Africa, discusses economic development in Africa in the last few decades, and contributes analysis on Nigeria's new competition law. Together, the reviews provide comprehensive insight into the role of competition law in the context of economic development in Africa
