Description:
Supervision and inspection are considered to be the major planks of the strategy to improve the quality of school education. Several countries have started transforming school supervision into a genuine quality improvement mechanism. Research found that the quality of schools directly relates to the quality of monitoring. This paper- an integral part of the doctoral dissertation – ‘A study of Management Practices of Secondary Schools', attempts to explore the status of school supervision as a strategic tool for quality improvement in Indian schools. A sample of 188 heads of schools – about 34% of the population in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh in India, was selected through stratified sampling. The collected data is analyzed with Chi Square test with the help of SPSS-19. The findings reveal that the external supervision is very weak and failed to serve as quality improvement tool while there are many constraints to exercise internal supervision efficiently
