This article analyses the main determinants of income per capita based on a sample of 50 countries for the period 2005 to 2009, using multivariate statistics. The results show that institutional indicators (heterodox) have a greater impact on the welfare of the population than the traditional macroeconomic variables (orthodox). These results show that the process of improving the quality of life of the population is mainly the result from the interaction between institutions, firms and technological progress that shapes historical standards, social and institutional peculiar to each country
