  • Description: The growth of venture capital as an industry has opened up an alternative route to obtaining financial resources for those companies with particular characteristics, including young companies, those that belong to high risk sectors, those that are more challenged by asymmetries of information, and those that cannot rely on recognition of their future potential in a given sector. A discussion based on the theoretical construct of venture capital firms, the role of these above and beyond financial intermediation, the implications they have in the area of public policy, in addition to opportunities for future research, are the topics which are covered within the review of the literature presented here, drawing on different theoretical and empirical contributions published in a variety of academic journals over the last decade
