  • Description: The supply chain from farm to fork consists of multiple layers of intermediation, mostly without any qualitative value addition. This makes the chain inefficient, resulting into costlier food products to the consumers. It is high time to have a fresh look at the supply chain management with a view to improve marketing efficiency and enhance farmers‘ price realization without increasing price paid by the consumers.Pan India Electronic Spot Exchange can play a vital role in managing supply chain of farm produce by making the entire agriculture marketing process transparent and efficient. National Spot Exchange has already demonstrated such model by creating an electronic market linkage between farmers and the end users. The role of Spot Exchange is basically to carry out grading and quality certification of the produce, provide counter-party guarantee in respect of all trades and to enable the farmers to access pan India market. End users, processors and exporters are able to procure quality certified material, to avoid hassles relating to physical market and also to avoid credit risk and counter party risk.Redefining the supply chain management through electronic exchanges also implies encouraging grading, packaging and semi processing at farm gate, as the farmers will be directly connected with the consumers and they will endeavor to meet the choice and taste of the actual users.During last one year, such experiments have been done at 44 locations in different parts of the country. Empirical data shows that these initiatives have been successful in achieving the desired results. Now, the need of the hour is to scale up such operation to 1000s of location with due support of trade, industry, Government agencies and all stake holders connected with agribusiness
