Essayet gir en kritisk presentasjon og vurdering av Eikrems resonnement med særlig vekt på hans skille mellom Jesu død i seg selv og måten Jesus døde på, der han mener det første skjedde etter Guds vilje, det andre ikke. I essayet argumenteres det for at en slik skjelning ikke er holdbar, og at idealet om å gi en koherent teologisk framstilling må sees i sammenheng med spørsmålet om autentisitet i kristen og bibelsk forstand.
In his book God as Sacrificial Love: A Systematic Exploration of a Controversial Notion (2018), Asle Eikrem analyzes the theological meaning of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus as it relates to the concept of sacrifice. Based on his own definition of the concept, he argues that Jesus’s death should not be understood as a self-sacrifice. The essay gives a critical analysis of Eikrem’s argument with special regard to his distinction between the death of Jesus in itself, and the way in which it happened. According to Eikrem, while the first happened according to God’s will, the second did not. The essay argues that this distinction is not sustainable. It is also argued that the criterion of theological coherence has to be connected to the question of Christian and biblical authenticity.
