Much of the critique against Pope Francis and his Church reforms can, arguably, be related to a widespread lack of knowledge concerning his theological and intellectual formation. This article is a study of Bergoglio’s/Pope Francis’s relation to Catholic continental theology. It tries to demonstrate that his main inspiration comes from his reading of «the new theologians» and their contribution leading up to the ecclesial renewals of Vatican II: Yves Congar, Henri de Lubac and Hans Urs von Balthasar.
