  • Description: On the 11th of November 2020, the Federal Government of Nigeria ratified its membership of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which now came into effect on the 1st of January 2021. The Nigerian Government also recently opened up its land boarders with Benin Republic, Niger and Cameroun, which has been closed for more than a year now because the government believed that the smuggling of food, good & services through these channels were undermining local agricultural producers and manufacturers. This move is however not farfetched from the recently ratified AfCFTA. Given Nigeria’s position as one of the continent’s largest economy and most populous country, it is a huge boost for the objectives of AfCTA. It is believed that re-opening of the boarders will send a strong signal about Nigeria’s intention to boost intra-African trade. Thus this paper examines the economic benefits both Nigeria & Africa stands to enjoy, the issues likely to be faced by the agreement, and whether or not the dispute mechanism system under the agreement is sufficient
