  • Description: This paper proposes a theoretical framework to study how horizontal inequality and economy factors affect the onset, intensity, and duration of conflicts. These phenomena are considered to involve appropriation activities, and are defined by the existence of social tensions and grievances as a result of perceived inequality between groups and/or the relative profitability of appropriation. Our model captures the positive association between grievances, poverty, lootable goods, volatility, and the risk of conflict. Theoretical predictions highlight the relevance of factor productivity, economic shocks, availability of lootable goods, and state capacity to explain conflict dynamics
