  • Description: How technology innovation and diffusion influence the development of different industries has attracted extensive attention. Based on a panel dataset of 280 cities in China from 2007 to 2016, we examine the effect of Internet diffusion on local industrial structure upgrading. The results show that the penetration of the Internet significantly contributes to the upgrading of industrial structure at the city level. For every 1% increase in the rate of Internet penetration, the level of industrial structure upgrading rises by approximately 0.19% on average. The mechanism analysis indicates that the Internet can promote industrial structure upgrading by increasing the ratio between the labor productivity of the tertiary industry and the labor productivity of the secondary industry. The positive impacts of Internet diffusion on industrial structure upgrading also vary among cities in terms of industrial structure, GDP level, factor endowment and information infrastructure. In particular, the positive effect of Internet diffusion is greater for those cities with a more advanced service industry, higher GDP levels, less resource dependence and better information infrastructure
