  • Description: In the past decade, with the increasing environmental pollution by the frequent spill accidents and industrial wastewater emissions, superhydrophobic materials for oil-water separation have attracted considerable attention. Meanwhile, the incorporation of other functions into superhydrophobic materials is also an important development direction. Herein, we proposed a new strategy for the preparation of superhydrophobic, flame-retardant and magnetic polyurethane sponge (SFRM-PUS) for oil-water separation. It was based on the deposition of the ferric oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles, graphene oxide (GO) and phytic acid (PA) on the skeleton surface of the pristine PUS via a simple immersion-coating method, the subsequent hydroiodic acid (HI) treatment and perfluorooctyltriethylsilane (PFOTES) modification. The SFRM-PUS had a high water contact angle (WCA) of 156 o , and exhibited excellent anti-adhesion property and oil-water separation capability. By means of the magnetic property, the SFRM-PUS was also applied for the removal of oil from water in specified area. In addition, owing to the physical barrier effect of reduced GO (rGO)/Fe 3 O 4 and the catalytic charring effect of PA, the SFRM-PUS showed superior flame-retardant performance, and the ignited flame extinguished within only 4 s. The prepared SFRM-PUS has great application potential in the treatment of oil spill accidents and industrial sewage emissions
