  • Description: Utilizing a novel database of trip ticket bookings in China during 2017–2019, we examine whether people escape from pollution by traveling to “cleaner” places. We construct travel flows at the city-pair-reservation-date level. Combining IV with high-dimensional fixed effects, we find a 10-unit increase in the AQI gap between a city pair leads to a 0.41% (0.26%) increase in train and airline ticket bookings from the origination to the destination city departing within one day (2-7 days). Our analysis shows people buy train tickets to cleaner intra-province cities with tourism attractions. We also measure WTP for clean air
