  • Description: The effect of immigration on destination countries is one of the most highly debated issues. The voluminous empirical literature that has emerged in this field is far from conclusive. In this paper I test the impact of an unprecedented increase in immigrants with dissimilar social capital backgrounds on the host country’s crime. To do this I explore the Syrian refugee influx in Turkey and assess their impact on regional crime rates. Starting from simple difference-in-difference method, I employ a more machine learning approach for causal inference to assess the impact. I find no impact on violent crime rate but find some impact on non-violent crime rate
