  • Description: The scope of the present thesis is the synthesis and investigation of new zirconium(IV) metal organic frameworks (Zr4+-MOFs) based on terephthalate ligands. Microporous MOFs featuring an 8-connected net were isolated and their application as sorbents and luminescent sensors for toxic anions is presented. These materials were further combined with alginic acid and successfully used as stationary phase in ion-exchange column for wastewater treatment. In addition, the synthesis of new Zr4+-MOFs based on similar terephthalate ligands and long alkyl functional groups was studied, aiming at the isolation of microporous hydrophobic-superhydrophobic MOFs. These materials showed great potential in the removal of organic pollutants. However, due to their low mechanical strength, their application in the treatment of pollutants in aqueous media was not possible. Thus, they were chemically incorporated in fabrics, which were originally modified with polydopamine.In the present thesis, the synthesis and characterization of various materials are described. More precisely, 14 organic terephthalate compounds (ligands) with different functional groups, 15 MOFs, 3 ΜΟF-alginic acid composites used as stationary phase in ion-exchange columns and 3 fabrics with incorporated MOFs are synthesized. Moreover, 10 materials with sorbed anions were isolated. In detail, the synthesis and characterization of the following are described: Organic compounds: 2 -((pyridinyl-2-methyl)ammonium)-terephthalic acid (H2PATP), 2,5-diamino-terephthalic acid ((NH2)2BDC), 2-ethylamino- terephthalic acid (C2H5NH-H2BDC), 2-propylamino-terephthalic acid (C3H7NH-H2BDC), 2-isobutylamino-terephthalic acid (C4H9NH-H2BDC), 2-butylamino-terepthalic acid (C4H9NH-H2BDC), 2-pentylamino-terepthalic acid (C5H11NH-H2BDC), 2-hexylamino-terephthalic acid (C6H13NH-H2BDC), 2-heptylamino-terephthalic acid (C7H15NH-H2BDC), 2-octylamino-terephthalic acid (C8H17NH-H2BDC), 2-nonylamino-terepthalic acid (C9H19NH-H2BDC), 2-decylamino-terephthalic acid (C10H21NH-H2BDC), ...
