This paper discusses the limits of 'local labor systems' - as defined and identified in the standard procedure implemented by ISTAT (Italian Central Static Office) - when used to conceptualize the entire Italian territory. The wide use of this categories by researchers and policy makers warrants a critical analysis of the range of application of the outcomes of the procedure. After focusing on some cases on which the procedure seems to fail patently, some suggestions are given to improve it, and come to a better understanding of the territorial organization of the economic process in Italy
