  • Description: This chapter elaborates on the choice of type of affiliation to a chain by the individual hotel. It discusses the preferred types of affiliation by hotel managers and owners, and the factors that influence their preferences by using Bulgaria as an exemplary case study. The authors find that hoteliers in the country perceive two of the non-equity forms of affiliation (namely, franchise and management contract) as equally appropriate for the business environment in the country as the ownership based forms (full ownership and joint venture), and much more appropriate compared to the other two non-equity modes (lease and marketing consortium). These findings suggest that if hotel chains look for local partners in the country they should attract the m by offering franchise agreement and/or management contract
