From a nation dependent on food imports to feed its population, India today is not only self--sufficient in grain production, but also has a substantial reserve. This gain has been accomplished through the extensification of land under agriculture, as well as the intensification of agricultural inputs, i.e. fertilizers, pesticides and irrigation. The fertilizer industry in India has grown tremendously in the last 30 years. The Government is keen to see that fertilizer reaches the farmers in the remote and hilly areas. However, the amount of fertilizers used in the agricultural fields of northeast for both kharif and rabi crops is much less compared to the other zones of the country. Variation to a larger extent is noted in the consumption of fertilizers even in the northeastern states. The present paper looks forward towards the various statistical aspects of fertilizer consumption, reasons for such low ebb and tries to bring out the fact hidden behind figures
