  • Description: This paper investigates the effect of tourism shocks on the educational choices and the geographical sorting of workers in Italy. We exploit exogenous variation in tourism flows using a shift-share measure which leverages on shocks to the perceived safety in alternative tourism destinations and the distribution of foreign tourists across countries and Italian provinces. We find that tourism inflows decrease college enrollment rates and completions throughout Italy, affecting mostly students who would have studied in a college that is located outside of their province of residence. Moreover, students are inclined towards fields of study that involve language and communication. We also find that tourism alters migratory flows of workers within Italy, increasing inflows of low-educated workers and reducing the share of college-educated workers in exposed provinces. Our results show that the tourism sector does not affect Italy's secular brain drain
