  • Description: Infrastructures are essential parts of modern societies, yet they may negatively affect the sustainability of societies and the environment. The adverse impacts of linear infrastructures such as highways can be even more pronounced. One of the most considerable aspects of highways affecting sustainability is alignment which must be optimized to decrease environmental impacts. However, alignments must also be cost-effective as well to be implementable, posing a conflict with decreasing negative impacts. Therefore, a method that can design several alignments in a reasonable time while considering construction costs, sustainability criteria, and highway constraints is needed to facilitate and accelerate alignment design. To this end, in this study, a framework is proposed which integrates a sustainability rating system, named Envision with NSGA-II, and GIS. Using three selected criteria from Envision, a sustainability violation objective function is defined, and tested. To decrease the computation duration, a multiprocessing approach is combined with NSGA-II. Then, the framework with customized initial population is implemented in a case study in various scenarios which validated the capability of the framework
