  • Description: This study applies panel data analysis to provide new estimates of the effects of populism on macroeconomic performance. Using new datasets of populist leaders and parties between 1970 and 2019, categorizing governments into presidential and non-presidential, and applying two econometrics models are some of the features that distinguish this study from previous research. Employing System-GMM and Pooled mean group estimator shows that populist leaders have a significantly negative effect on GDP growth. Inflation also is discussed as further indicator of macroeconomic performance
