The article explores the historical writings of the Norwegian-born historian Gerhard Schøning (1722-1780) in relation to his eighteenth-century political context in the absolute monarchy of Denmark-Norway. Schøning was one of the founding members of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters. The article attempts to demonstrate how Schøningʼs close links to other members of this constellation are important in order to understand his distinctive character as both a historian and a historical actor.
