  • Description: While several studies have highlighted the potential and opportunities of digitalisation for EA, few have explored the perceptions of practitioners using a mixed-methods approach. This study took a close look at the role of advanced digital approaches, such as the introduction of artificial intelligence into EA practice. The research process was based on a literature review, focus group discussions and exploratory interviews with agencies, EA practitioners, researchers, associations and environmental groups. The process resulted in six categories of advanced solutions, covering challenges, opportunities and a classification of process steps in EA, based on different stakeholder perspectives and the state of research on digitalisation in environmental assessment. Despite the wealth of academic work on digitisation in EA, it became clear that the majority of practitioners in Austria and Germany were not familiar with advanced digital approaches and tools. While other planning disciplines are exploiting the potential of advanced digital tools, EA practitioners still share concerns about data quality, security, legal uncertainties, but also skills and know-how. The study reveals a discrepancy and need for training and confidence building. It seeks to contribute to the promotion of inter- & transdisciplinary exchange involving the wider EA community
