  • Description: New forms of worker voice, bolstered by the power of social media, are growing in number and involve a wide range of workers. How do workers exercise their voice on social media to address workplace issues? Can worker voice on social media lead to workplace changes in authoritarian contexts? We empirically examine these questions by studying Chinese tech workers’ resistance to the crushing culture of overwork. Using computational topic modeling with social media data and qualitative analysis of interviews, we find social media allowed workers to discuss a multiplicity of concerns, give each other emotional support, and share information with distributed audiences. Worker voice on social media effectively drew public attention to workers’ experiences and put pressure on the Chinese government to take action. However, the grievance-driven worker voice on social media may not have the full power to enable workers to push for changes in their own workplaces
