  • Description: Traditional regression analysis of the relationship between macroeconomic characteristics and nonperforming loan (NPL) provisions makes an implicit assumption that the global economic systems are stable over time. This assumption has been shown to be incorrect and the global economic system is a federation of complex adaptive systems that are continually adapting to changes in both internal and external factors. Using a systems-based methodology appropriate for complex adaptive systems this paper suggests that, within the constraint of the data used, macroeconomic characteristics are unable to discern whether countries might have increasing or decreasing NPL provisions over time
