  • Description: The myelin sheath is a multi-layered oligodendroglial membrane that enwraps axons, providing insulation and support. Although myelin is one of the most long-lived structures in the nervous system, its maintenance requires both the slow replenishment of constituents by newly synthesized molecules and the degradation of aged constituents. This raises the question which cellular mechanisms enable myelin biogenesis and turnover.
