Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a transmissible neurodegenerative disease with fatal outcome. Occurring in cattle it can be transferred to humans via the food chain causing variant Creutztfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). The causing agent is a misfolded prion protein (PrPSc) which accumulates in the brain causing irreparable damage to the tissue.
