- Description: Since its creation in 2016, the mission of the CAS has been to explore and investigate research topics to support and enhance the scientific and strategic development of the JRC. By pump-priming anticipation and interdisciplinatrity as its entry level method offering, CAS strives to enhance the JRC's capacity to better inform and influence regulatory frameworks needed to address the new and emerging societal challenges facing the EU. It provides an incubator for new and innovative scientific ideas that fall outside the normal scope of the JRC's traditional policy support activities, offering a compass point from which to direct and interpret future research activities, enabling the JRC to elaborate on policy options and their impact well ahead of time. CAS facilitates interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary thinking across a wide range of research activities in order to comprehensively understand their combined impact on our society. As well as having access to the research activities and facilities of the JRC, CAS researchers and scientists gain valuable experience and exposure to the political brokerage that often frames and defines the science-policy interface. As standalone and non-consecutive activities, CAS projects can adapt to the evolving needs and interests of their underlying research processes. Each CAS project is typically led by a lead scientist with an established reputation in the research field concerned, who is supported by a team of up to four researchers and external experts. The projects themselves have an initial duration of three years, after which they may be considered for mainstreaming into the traditional work programme of the JRC.
