  • Description: The general rationale of the Global Net on "Consumer Exposure Modelling" Workshop no. 4 on "Exposure related Data" took place on 23rd June 2005 in Intra (Italy) was: The Global Net on Consumer Exposure Modelling is sponsored by the Institute for Health and Consumer Protection/Physical-Chemical Exposure Unit of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Ispra. It focuses on development, and international harmonization and validation of consumer exposure modelling approaches. In the context of a series of five workshops in June 2005, a workshop was held that focused on exposure-related data. Exposure-related data have a fundamental role to play in any process for estimating exposure and evaluating risks. In particular: · The need for exposure data varies with the role they are expected to have in the decision making process (ranking, screening, an iterative refinement, detailed evaluation, etc.), and · The extent to which useful data are available is affected by the mechanisms underway which generate data and the choice of any model (whether simple algorithm or complex software) considered appropriate to characterise the scenario being studied. The purpose of this workshop was to: a) Identification of the core data required to support exposure models (at the general and scenario specific levels) b) Identification of sources of exposure information that are/are not effectively integrated into current exposure information systems/exchanges c) Agreement on some of the major exposure information needs and the extent to which these can be improved through global cooperation d) Obtaining a better understanding of the different global drivers for, sources of and perceptions regarding exposure related data e) Identification of specific exposure information that might be considered important under the proposed EU REACH regulation.
