Description:
Johann Sebastian Bach’s works for melody instruments are unique testaments to a sublime polyphonic art. They show skillful mastery of technique to voice a single melody instrument in a fashion usually reserved for pianos, organs, and ensembles. Bach followed existing traditions, but developed them further. The techniques for achieving both latent and manifest polyphony are examined. Conclusions from a compositional analysis and a discussion of sources and stylistic ramifications raise new aspects for the chronology of Bach’s solo chamber works.
