A conjecture of Artin suggests that systems of r forms of degree k with integral coefficients in n variables should have a nontrivial p-adic zero when n>rk^2. In this thesis we prove that pairs of diagonal forms of degree 4 in 49 or more variables have a nontrivial 2-adic zero.
