  • Description: Zusammenfassung: The Marfan Syndrome (MFS) is a genetically inherited connective tissue disease. The purpose of the study is to apply time-resolved three-dimensional (3D) phase contrast MRI with three-directional velocity encoding (flow-sensitive 4D MRI) for the characterization of flow pattern and hemodynamic changes in patients with Marfan syndrome compared with normal controls. We examined 31 patients (median age =15,0 years), 12 volunteers for the quantitative analysis (median age =24,0 years) and 10 volunteers for the qualitative analysis (median age =25,5 years). Due to the decrease of aortic elasticity the wall shear stress is increased and has a heterogenuous pattern in Marfan patients. The patient group showed significantly more frequent helices in the descending aorta. Even though the MFS group has changes of the blood flow and hemodynamic, no significant alterations in the anatomic dimensions was measured. Those changes could be the reason for type-B dissections in MFS patients despite normal aortic diameters
