  • Description: Maritime piracy and terrorism are regarded as major threats to international sea-borne trade. Within the framework of the PiraT-Project this survey aims to summarize the current state of scientific economic research on maritime piracy and terrorism. The survey contains economic articles from ISI web of science and RePEc. Most studies relate their research to the existing problems in Somalia, the Gulf of Aden and South-East-Asia. We present literature on definitions and concepts, risk analyses and existing hazards, costs and effects, the maritime insurance sector and on measures to combat this piracy and maritime terrorism. We finally give a brief conclusion and identify open research questions. As it is a new field of research, most studies are descriptive and only some recent works uses advanced methods. Further research is needed to investigate the micro-economic behavior of the actors involved and to focus on the macro-economic impact on growth and trade of the respective countries. (DIW/Pll)
