Description:
The Benguela current provides nutrient-rich water that aids harmful algal blooms in Northern Benguela. These can consist of species that produce phycotoxins. One such bloom consisting of Gonyaulax spinifera was detected in 2011. Besides others Yessotoxin were analyzed in mussel and phytoplankton samples for the first time in this region. Those Benguela G. spinifera cultures formed a monophyletic group. Phosphate and nitrate reduction affected G. spinifera, with yessotoxin production increasing under low phosphate conditions, while low nitrate enhanced cell growth.
