The architect Cesar Pinnau (1906-1988) continues to be fiercely debated: was he a key representative of national socialist architecture? Did his political beliefs carry over into his work after 1945? Or was he committed to transhistorical Classicism for his whole life? Eduard Führ examines how the identity of an architect is constructed - through selective editing of his work and vague dating, through the construction of a biography and through publications. The study shows how Pinnau himself shaped identities in his work for the state, companies and elites, and discusses how the approaches to an analysis of Pinnau are used for controversial definitions of the identity of architecture as a discipline.
