This thesis is based on formalin-fixed human brain specimens that were scanned on a 3T clinical MR system using a three-dimensional multi-gradient-echo technique (3D-FLASH). The contrast is defined by a combination of proton density (PD), magnetization transfer (MT) and T2*-weighting. It is shown that echo averaging decreased the noise and the usage of an MT pre-pulse augmented the contrast-to-noise ratio between gray and white matter by 53 % compared to imaging without MT.
