Description:
; This PhD thesis classifies non-abelian, simple and transitive permutation groups G of fixity 4 in which there is an involution with exactly four fixed points. The fixity of a group G in its action on a set Ω is the maximum number of fixed points on Ω of non-trivial elements of G. Furthermore, the actions of non-abelian simple groups on compact Riemann surfaces of genus at least 2 in fixity 4 will be classified under a conjecture about transitive permutation groups. This conjecture is about transitive permutation groups of fixity 4 having cyclic point stabilisers. This thesis uses techniques of group theory, representation theory and the local structure of the groups, i.e. centralisers of involutions, normalisers of subgroups and maximal subgroups.
